First date safety tips for everyone in India

· 3 min read

Safety on a first date is not about distrust. It is a few habits that let you relax and enjoy yourself. These tips are for everyone, of any gender and orientation, including LGBTQ+ people, who may have extra reasons to be careful about privacy. Women will find more in our safe first date checklist for women.

Before you meet

Do your thinking before you leave home.

  • Talk first. A few days of messages tell you a lot about how someone handles questions and boundaries.
  • Understand verification. The selfie badge on MeetBites means a live selfie matched the profile photos. It is not an ID check, an age check or a background check, and MeetBites does not run criminal background checks.
  • Reverse image search is optional, but a quick check of their photos can catch a copied profile.
  • Never send money, for any reason, however good the story.

Choose the place and the journey

Pick a busy public place in daylight, ideally somewhere you have been or can check on a map. MeetBites limits newcomers to daytime first dates, and it is good advice for everyone. Travel to and from the date on your own, so you control when you leave.

During the date

Small habits keep you in control.

  • Keep your drink in sight and never leave it unattended. Order a fresh one if you step away.
  • Limit alcohol. Clear-headed decisions are safer ones.
  • Keep your phone charged, and know where the exit is.
  • Do not be taken to a second location, such as a home, a car or a quiet spot. Say no politely.

Tell someone and check in

Tell a friend who you are meeting, where and when. On MeetBites you can send them a share my date link, and they do not need to sign in to view it. Agree on a time you will message them afterwards, and stick to it. Read our safety page and community guidelines for how reports and check-ins work.

Red flags and how to leave

Watch for pressure to move somewhere private, requests for money, refusing a public venue, hostility when you say no, or pushing a boundary. One of these is enough to end the date.

You do not owe an explanation. Try: 'This is not working for me, I am going to head off.' Walk to venue staff if you feel unsafe and ask for help, or book a cab and wait in a busy spot.

Afterwards, and consent

If something went wrong, block and report the person. MeetBites has report and block tools. In an emergency in India, call 112.

Consent matters at every step. A yes to coffee is not a yes to anything else. Anyone can say stop, and it must be respected. See how it works and, for a city near you, the Hyderabad guide.

Questions people ask

Does the verified badge mean someone is safe?

No. It means a live selfie matched their profile photos. It is not an ID, age or background check, so keep taking normal precautions.

Should I tell a friend about my date?

Yes. Share who, where and when, and agree on a check-in. On MeetBites, the share my date link lets a friend follow the plan without signing in.

What if I feel unsafe during a date?

Leave, and go to staff or a crowded place. Book a cab, and call 112 if it is an emergency. Afterwards, block and report the person.

What if my date wants to move to another place?

You can say no. Suggest finishing where you are, or end the date. A first date should stay public.
